This tutorial shows how to design templates and use hand tools to shape a foam mold for building a skateboard deck in the Roarockit Thin Air Press.

Many people ask if it is possible to make a drop board using our Thin Air Press. This tutorial goes through the process involved to making this type of deck.
In order to properly build this deck it is essential to review my FOOLPROOF DIY SKATEBOARD FOAM MOLD BUILD to see how to design your deck templates and how to shape your foam mold.

Things were happening last evening with a good turnout to our first club meeting.
Home made pizza, beer, all kinds of longboards to look at, talk about and ride made for good times last evening at Roarockit.
We also were treated with an exclusive viewing of Brandon Steel’s documentary, Sketch. If you have not had an opportunity to seen this video, it is a must for anyone interested in board building as it goes through the ups and downs of a group of downtown Toronto street youth set on building their own decks.
We are going to work on getting Brandon back for another viewing of his great video.
Want to thank all for coming out and to let the forum know we are doing it again next month, same time, same place.
Ted

Here are a few pics of our grand opening.
Highlights are Alan Sidlo at the Hoof……niteriders paradise
Surprise visit from the Ontario minister of Education Kathleen Wynne. Walks in on party. Gets an education!
Kids win Roarockit swag. never ending big smiles.
Thanks to all that attended…. Good to get a bunch of boarders together.
Ted

Here is an invite for the opening of our new diggs. If you are in the Toronto area please feel free to come by and see what we are working on.

Check out mojomuskrat’s sweet Hawaiian shirt and the deck he built using the Roarockit longboard kit he won over on the Fish.

This is a picture of a deck built by Shannan Collins, his daughter and son. The deck was built as a gift for their 14 year old nephew.
Here is the letter he Shannan sent to us:
Norah,
Well we finished our first board and I’ve attached a few pics as you requested.
My son (7) and daughter (9) built it with me as a gift for my 14 year old nephew. The kids mainly did the gluing, operated the vacuum press (because it is so easy), and assembly of hardware (with help from Dad). We ship it to our nephew tomorrow and we hope he likes his new ride!
The top and bottom layers are all marquetry, using mahogany, pear, maple, cherry, and black dyed popular (i think but not sure). Turcks are ExKate 201, Bones Red bearings, and ExKate 70mm Easy Rider wheels. We titled this piece “Philips Phish”.
Hope you enjoy the pics as much as we enjoyed making #1. We have 3 more to build now.
Regards,
Shannan Collins

These decks are really special.
Check out the wood burning designs that take up to 10 hours to produce.
FROGZ will custom make one of these cruisers for you.
Almost too pretty to ride but how sweet it would be!

Here is a copy of an email and pictures we got this weekend. Norah and I flipped over the deck’s that Austin and his grandfather, Carlos built using the Thin Air Press system.
hi Norah,
Thanks for all your help. It looks like my sister ordered those boards for our nephew for his birthday. Thanks again. My grandson, Austin and I have really enjoyed your product. Here are some photos of our first try at making a skateboard. It was easy fast and fun. The only problem I now have is that other kids in the neighborhood want to build their own skateboards. Looks like I will be placing another order when I get back from vacation. We are going to the mountains in New York and Maine to see the changing of the fall colors. It looks like it will be about a 10,000 miles trip by the time we get back home in two months. We travel in a motorhome and tow a jeep.
Enjoy your day!
Carlos

Johnnyflickstar from Portland Oregon showes how to adapt a Roarockit pintail into a dropthrough. His comment, about sums it up.
“this is a FASSSTTTT ride! i love it.”

This deck build will be featured in an upcoming Fine Woodworking online video build. Matthew built this great looking deck using the Thin Air Press kit.
We look forward to the video and will post a link when released.

This deck was made using our Thin Air Press. Check out the shape he gets from his custom foam mold.

Here is the picture of the finished street deck class we did at the Hui in Maui. The kids had a fantastic time building their decks.
Here are the pics of our 2006 Longboard deckmaking class in Maui, Hawaii. The class was a ton of fun. All ten students built great decks with awesome designs.

I have a new blog called Thin Air Press. It will be specific to woodworking projects. There are a bunch of new tutorials that are posted on the site. Here is the link:
We travelled to Chicago this past weekend for a deck building session with Alan Sidlo. Here are some of the pictures of the session.

Big thanks to Alan and Windward Sports for helping with this build.

Andre lives in South Africa. To build this deck he went through a bunch of hurdles. First trying to find foam for his mold similar to what we use here in North America was a challenge then trying to locating enough hard Maple veneer for a deck. Here is his results.

Here’s the explanation about this ROCKIT! Built by SHAPESHIFTER aka Alan Sidlo
It’s a 6 ply maple rocker, with rolled down edges. there is a 3/16″ foam micro-core which is recessed for impact resistance and sandwiched within a clam shell of 3 plies on top and 3 below - thought it would give it the thicknes of a 9 ply in the center and the stiffness of a 7 or 8 ply without all that extra weight…. instead it feels more like a very flexy 5 ply with the strength of a seven. there’s a generous kick, nose fit for hang’n and with the 22″ wheel base, it has a stiff yet snappy feel which is totally enhanced by its lightness… this board was made for slashing! powered by the 40″ X 9″ roarockit pin tail kit. i like to call it the “one like no other”.
What can I say. This guy makes great boards! If you are in the UK or anywhere in fact and want a SWEET custom build, look no further, Munchh is the man.
He has just begun to use our TAP kit to make decks. Here is his first ride using the Roarockit build.
This testimonial says it all:
“Anyone with the smallest amount of woodworking knowledge should give the skateboard kit a go, i’m making better decks than ever since i did, it really is the best money i’ve spent this year.”
Steve, ‘Munchh boards’ England.
